On August 6, 2026, at the Dung Quat Refinery, Petrovietnam Refining and Petrochemical Corporation (BSR) officially shipped its first batch of B5 biodiesel (DO B5) produced at the refinery to two customers: Military Petroleum General Company One Member Limited Liability Company and Nam Phuc Investment Joint Stock Company.

The shipment marks an important milestone in BSR’s journey to research, develop and commercialize biofuel products, contributing to the energy transition and the development of greener, more environmentally friendly fuels in line with the Government’s and Petrovietnam’s strategic directions.

The successful commercialization of DO B5 not only demonstrates BSR’s research and production capabilities, but also reflects its commitment to supporting Vietnam’s national goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing the use of renewable fuels and strengthening national energy security.

BSR supplied 25 m³ of B5 biodiesel to Military Petroleum General Company One Member Limited Liability Company and 19.5 m³ to Nam Phuc Investment Joint Stock Company under FCA Dung Quat delivery terms. The products were delivered from August 5 to 10, 2026, meeting BSR’s TCCS 25:2026/BSR internal standard for B5 diesel fuel, as well as other commercial terms applied in accordance with the 2026 sales contracts.

Before shipment, BSR carried out strict controls throughout the blending and quality assurance process. After blending was completed, samples were taken from all product storage tanks and tested at BSR’s laboratory to verify compliance with all required quality specifications. At the same time, relevant units collected samples for conformity assessment under Method 7 to obtain the Certificate of Conformity, ensuring that the product fully met technical requirements before being released to the market.

The first commercial batch was made possible through extensive research and careful preparation by BSR. Under a scientific and technological cooperation program between BSR and KEYLAB, the partner supplied 3,000 liters of B100 biodiesel for research and testing in the production of B5 and B10 fuels.

Following the research and testing phase, approximately 2,250 liters of B100 remained, enough to produce around 43–45 m³ of B5 biodiesel. Based on this available feedstock, BSR completed preparations for the raw materials, blending process, quality control system and other technical requirements needed to conduct the trial commercialization of the product at the Dung Quat Refinery.

Alongside the technical preparations, BSR proactively engaged with potential customers, introduced the product and agreed on a trial consumption plan. Military Petroleum General Company One Member Limited Liability Company and Nam Phuc Investment Joint Stock Company agreed to participate in the program, providing an opportunity for BSR to comprehensively evaluate the blending, shipment, transportation and actual use of the product under real-world conditions.

According to BSR, the trial production and sale of B5 biodiesel is aligned with the amount of B100 currently available. More importantly, it provides valuable technical and commercial data, as well as feedback from customers. These results will serve as a basis for BSR to further improve its production and quality control processes, refine its commercial operations and expand the market for biofuel products in the future.

B100 is pure biodiesel made entirely from Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME), without any petroleum blending. The use of biofuels can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fine particulate matter, while replacing part of the conventional fossil fuel supply.

As a leading company in Vietnam’s refining and petrochemical industry, BSR is gradually implementing its development strategy toward a greener, more sustainable business model in response to global energy transition trends. In recent years, in addition to operating the Dung Quat Refinery at optimal capacity, BSR has continuously researched and developed new, higher-value and more environmentally friendly products, including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), E10 RON 95 bio-gasoline and now B5 biodiesel.

The successive introduction of biofuel products to the market demonstrates BSR’s research capabilities, technological expertise and ability to respond quickly to the growing demand for cleaner energy. This is not only a significant step forward in the Corporation’s production and business activities, but also contributes to Vietnam’s commitments to reducing emissions, promoting a green and circular economy, and strengthening national energy security in the new era.
